Can I use a softbox for filming?
Absolutely. Recently, we've been seeing an increasing trend of photography techniques being used in the world of film. The FlatLight™ DOUBLE-55681 softbox provides a cost-effective alternative to budget panel lights (known as kinoflo), achieving similar results at a lower price point.
What's the difference between an octagonal and rectangular softbox?
The most noticeable difference is in the shape of reflections on reflective surfaces. This is particularly evident in portrait and fashion photography, where the octagonal shape mimics circular sunlight reflections. Octagonal softboxes also feature a better light distribution (especially when lighting from the front).
What should I keep in mind?
- Softboxes work best at close distances. Position them as close to your subjects or objects as possible, just outside the frame.
- The larger the softbox diameter, the softer the tonal transition between light and shadow.
- If you need to illuminate from a distance, remove the diffusing fabric. This will provide even more light.
