They are used to modify the properties of light: the size of the luminous surface, intensity, and direction. Recently, they have gained popularity for video productions as well. An excellent alternative to kinoflo lights. Softboxes soften tonal transitions between light and shadow.
Tip: Most lighting issues in a frame often result from an excess of light rather than its absence. When setting up your lighting, start with the lamps that have the least impact on the entire scene - set up the key (main) light last.
Lighting Fixture
The lighting fixture consists of a quadruple E27 bulb holder and a softbox hood (reflective and diffusing fabric with tensioning rods). The shape of the hood is designed to maximize the amount of light that reaches the diffusion fabric.
The softbox is made from high-quality materials used by leading manufacturers. Its interior is finished with a reflective silver metallic surface, which prevents light emission backward and sideways while reflecting it in the desired direction - onto the diffusing fabric. This ensures that the maximum amount of light reaches the object being photographed. The exterior of the softbox is matte black, preventing reflections from other lamps.
The softbox is designed to work with four bulbs with a maximum power of 85W/400W each. It allows for stepped power adjustment by turning on/off pairs of bulbs (two switches): 0%-50%-100%. The set attaches to lighting stands using a bracket that provides an adjustable angle.
Lighting Fixture Rear Panel
Controlling the lamp is straightforward and limited to two switches that turn on either the left or right pair of lamps. A 3A fuse is located in the "FUSE" socket. There's a hole in the central part for mounting an optional umbrella.
CGLS-815 Studio Stand
A three-section studio and outdoor lighting stand. Maximum height of 290cm, working height of 280cm, convenient section clamps, a 16mm studio head with a universal 1/4" thread. The stand is designed to work with small and medium lamps as well as lighting sets. It also performs well with flash and continuous lights, softboxes, and halogen lamps.
Its dimensions when folded have been reduced by the use of a telescopic folding mechanism, thus not limiting its wide range of operation (ranging from 95 to 280 cm, adjustable to any height) and versatility. The leg spread (from foot to foot) is 95cm.
Photo Bulb (36W/5500K)
A professional 36W fluorescent bulb with a natural color temperature of 5500K, equivalent to daylight. Designed for photography, filming, and monitor calibration stations.
This bulb generates light with an ideal color for photographic applications - it does not introduce any color bias. Thanks to its accurate color rendering, the bulb is perfect for photographers working under continuous lighting conditions. Using constant lighting allows you to model light faster and better predict the final result in photographs. The low power consumption enables using this bulb both in open fixtures and partially closed ones (softboxes, diffusers, octas). The luminous power of a 36W bulb corresponds to that of a 210W halogen bulb.
For photographic and video bulbs, the most important factor is CRI (Color Rendering Index; see table below), which for bulbs from this manufacturer is over 90. The difference between an ordinary household fluorescent bulb and a professional photographic one lies in the use of a special luminescent emitting light with a richer color spectrum.
The 36W photographic bulb has CE, Rohs, ISO9001 certifications. Energy-saving bulbs convert around 20-25% of the energy they consume into light. Compared to ordinary ones, they use about 80% less and have a longer lifespan.
Can I use a softbox for filming?
Absolutely. Recently, we've been seeing an increasing overlap between applications reserved for photography and the world of film. The SOFTBOX 60x90cm constant light fixture is an excellent alternative to budget panel lamp versions (so-called kinoflo). This solution is significantly cheaper while achieving the same effect.
What's the difference between an octagonal and rectangular softbox?
The most noticeable difference is in the shape of reflections on reflective surfaces. This is particularly evident in portraiture and fashion photography - the octagonal shape, similar to a circle, mimics solar reflections. Octagonal softboxes also have a better light distribution (especially when lighting from the front).
What should you keep in mind?
- Softboxes work best at short distances. Place them as close to the illuminated persons or objects, right on the edge of the frame.
- The larger the softbox diameter, the softer the tonal transition between light and shadow.
- If you need to illuminate from a large distance - remove the diffusing fabric. This will give you even more light.

How to assemble the SOFTBOX / OCTA lamp?
The lamp will arrive in a package containing: a stand, bulbs, fixture, and softbox. Assembly involves several steps:
- Remove the softbox from its cover, along with the tensioning rods for the softbox and the diffusing fabric. Set aside the diffusing fabric.
- From the box marked CGLX4, remove the lighting fixture. On the outer edge of the fixture (black plastic), there are eight holes.
- Insert the glass fiber rods into the openings in the lighting fixture. It's important to insert the thicker end of the rods into the fixture. They should go in with a slight resistance.
- Lay the softbox fabric on the floor so that the black material touches the floor, and the silver side faces upward. Leave the Velcro straps unfastened.
- Place the lighting fixture on top of the silver surface. Insert the thinner ends of the rods into the pockets sewn into the corners of the softbox hood.
- As you insert more rods, the softbox hood will start to stretch over the bending rods. You may need to use a little force, especially with octagonal softboxes.
- Once the hood is assembled, spread out the lighting stand and attach the fixture to it. Tighten the butterfly screws and fasten the Velcro straps at the back of the hood.
- Secure the bulbs in the fixture.
- Attach the diffusing fabric by fastening it with the Velcro straps onto the hood.
