What's the difference between an octagonal softbox and a rectangular one?
The main difference that can be easily noticed is the shape of reflections on reflective surfaces. This is particularly noticeable in portrait and fashion photography - the octagonal shape, similar to circular, mimics solar reflections. Octagonal softboxes also feature better light distribution (especially when lighting from the front).
What should I keep in mind?
- Softboxes work best at close distances. Position them as close as possible to your subjects or objects, right on the edge of the frame.
- The larger the softbox diameter, the softer the tonal transition between light and shadow.
- If you need to shine from a greater distance, remove the diffusive fabric. This will give you even more light.
