Can I use a softbox for filming?
Absolutely. Recently, we've been seeing an increasing trend of photography techniques being adopted in the world of film. The 40x40cm SOFTBOX light fixture serves as a fantastic alternative to budget panel lamp versions (known as kinoflo). This solution is significantly more cost-effective while still achieving the same results.
What's the difference between an octagonal softbox and a rectangular one?
The most noticeable difference is in the shape of reflections on reflective surfaces. This is particularly evident in portrait and fashion photography, where the octagonal shape, similar to a circle, mimics solar reflections. Octagonal softboxes also feature better light distribution (especially when lighting from the front).
What should I keep in mind?
- Softboxes work best at close distances. Position them as close as possible to the subjects or objects being lit, right on the edge of the frame.
- The larger the softbox diameter, the softer the tonal transition between light and shadow.
- If you need to shine from a greater distance, remove the diffusive fabric. This will give you even more light.
