Can I use a softbox for filming?
Absolutely. Recently, we've been seeing an increasing overlap between photography and film applications. The SOFTBOX OCTA 60cm light fixture is a great alternative to budget panel lamp versions (known as kinoflo). This solution is significantly less expensive while still achieving the same results.
What sets octagonal softboxes apart from rectangular ones?
The most noticeable difference is in the shape of reflections on reflective surfaces. This is particularly evident in portrait and fashion photography, where the circular-like octagonal shape mimics sunlight reflections. Octagonal softboxes also feature a better light distribution (especially when lighting from the front).
What should I keep in mind?
- Softboxes work best at short distances. Position them as close to the subjects or objects being lit, right on the edge of the frame.
- The larger the softbox diameter, the softer the tonal transition between light and shadow.
- If you need to shine from a long distance, remove the diffusive fabric. This will give you even more light.
